Supreme Court Shoots Down Transgender Law

via NHK

Japan’s Supreme Court has ruled that a law requiring transgender individuals to undergo reproductive organ removal in order to change their gender is unconstitutional.

The law, which has been criticized by international rights and medical groups, required transgender individuals to be diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder and undergo surgery.

The court’s ruling will require the government to revise the law, allowing transgender people to change their gender on official documents without surgery.

Japan has been slow to accept sexual and family diversity, and same-sex marriage is not legal.

LGBTQ+ individuals still face discrimination and often hide their sexuality.
