According to a recent CNN/SSRS poll, a majority of Republican primary voters do not consider the criminal charges against former President Donald Trump relevant to his fitness to serve as commander-in-chief.
The poll asked respondents whether the charges, if true, should disqualify Trump from the presidency, cast doubts on his fitness for the job but not disqualify him, or have no effect on his fitness for office.
At least 64% of respondents in each case said the charges were not relevant to his fitness for the presidency. (Poll: Do You Stand With Donald Trump? VOTE)
The poll found that GOP voters perceive Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s case against Trump, alleging 34 counts of falsification of business records, as the weakest among the four cases.
Only 8% of respondents said the charges should be disqualifying, while 20% think they should cast doubts on his ability to serve. However, a vast majority of 70% do not think the case has any bearing on his fitness for office.
In the case stemming from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into classified documents Trump allegedly took to Mar-a-Lago at the end of his presidency, 64% of GOP voters do not think the charges, if true, are relevant to his fitness for office.
Only 13% say the charges should bar Trump from the White House while another 24% think they cast doubt on his fitness for the job.
Similarly, in the case alleging Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 election results, 64% of likely GOP primary voters do not believe the four charges affect his adequacy to serve.
Conversely, 17% say the allegations, if valid, should prohibit Trump from becoming president, while 19% think they cast doubts on his adequacy for the presidency.
Regarding the case alleging Trump and his aides committed numerous crimes, including a RICO violation in their challenge of the election, 64% of respondents do not consider it a factor in determining Trump’s fitness for office.
The remaining 36% say it should disqualify him or bring questions about his fitness to lead.
The poll was conducted by SSRS for CNN between August 25 and 31 and surveyed 1,503 respondents, including 898 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. The margin of error for the total sample is plus or minus 3.5%.
