Sen. Bernie Sanders Opposes Unconditional Military Aid To Israel In Funding Bill

via CNN

Senator Bernie Sanders opposes unconditional military aid to Israel requested by President Joe Biden, citing concerns about Palestinian civilian deaths and displacement.

He supports funding for Israeli defensive technologies but opposes additional unconditional military aid.

Sanders has laid out conditions for supporting military aid to Israel, including changes in Israeli military practices and a plan for peace. (Trending: Elon Musk Condemns Arrest Of Jan 6 Protester)

“What the Netanyahu government is doing is immoral,” Sanders said.

“It is in violation of international law ― and the United States should not be complicit in those actions.”

“I believe it is appropriate for us to support defense systems that will protect Israeli citizens from incoming missile and rocket attacks,” he added.

“But I believe that it would be irresponsible for us to provide an additional $10.1 billion in unconditional military aid that will allow the Netanyahu government to continue its current offensive military approach.”

“We can’t ever put a price on defending democracy in its hour of need, because if Ukraine falls, Putin will keep on going, autocrats around the world will be emboldened, democracy ― this grand and noble experiment ― will enter an era of decline,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said.

“There are pieces of this bill that I strongly support, but in its present form, I do not think it serves the interests of the American people,” Sanders said.

“Count me in 100% for the humanitarian support that we need, not only in Gaza but all over this world.”

“Count me in for serious discussions about how we improve border security.” Count me in to help the people of Ukraine withstand Putin’s terrible invasion.”

“But do not count me in to give another $10 billion to a right-wing, extremist government in Israel.”

“Netanyahu’s resumption of bombing in Gaza is beyond the pale,” he posted. “Two million people are now in south Gaza. Many have fled earlier fighting in the north. The pause must be extended to get more humanitarian aid in and more hostages out.”

He emphasizes the need for more funding for child care, health care, and housing.

Sanders’ announcement is significant due to his influence on the American left and the media.

His stance reflects a shift in response to the escalating conflict and civilian casualties.
